SHILLONG: The Court of the Special Judge (POCSO), M.K. Lyngdoh, today, sentenced a 43-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor.

The convict, identified as Jogitar Japang, was found guilty of committing sexual offences against a 10-year-old girl in a case dating back to 2018.

Case Background

The case came to light on November 17, 2018, when a relative of the victim lodged a First Information Report (FIR) in Shillong. Based on the complaint, police registered Case No. 151(11)2018 under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections pertaining to sexual assault and harassment.

Following investigation, the matter was taken up as Special POCSO Case No. 38/2020.

After examining the evidence and witness testimonies, the court held that the prosecution had established the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

  • Sentence Awarded: 10 years of rigorous imprisonment

  • Remaining Term: Since the convict had already undergone approximately three months of custody during trial, he has been directed to serve the remaining 9 years, 8 months and 29 days in prison

The successful conviction was largely attributed to the meticulous investigation carried out by Woman Police Sub-Inspector (WPSI) Lily D. Sangma of the Sadar Police Station. Her detailed documentation, evidence collection and handling of witness statements played a crucial role in securing the conviction.
