Minister and NPP candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary Seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Ampareen Lyngdoh, on November 30, dispelled the ‘myth’ that the National People’s Party (NPP) is synonymous with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“We have our own identity; we are not going to be submerged by any ideas of ideologies which are aversed to the people of the state,” she said.

Lyngdoh, however, defended the party’s close ties with the BJP at the centre and said, “There is no harm to being coalition partners with NDA (National Democratic Alliance). Do not be gullible. Do not pass the buck.”

She further asserted that the misconception about an MP (Member of Parliament) being distant from the people unless he/she holds a post in the government, must be changed.

“MPs are individuals who can speak loudly for the state, and I will be that person if given the chance,” Lyngdoh said.

When asked about the performance of the sitting Shillong MP Vincent H Pala, Lyngdoh said, “I am not here to rate anyone; we are going to be contenders. Let the people themselves decide.”

Meanwhile, the minister also spelled out the agendas of the party for the upcoming polls.

Lyngdoh read out three agendas — consolidation of vote bank for the party in Shillong Parliamentary seat, to carry forward all agendas and issues left pending for quite some time, “which could be well handled by the MP, in the event of a win,” and to garner the support of everyone – to cut across party lines.
