BENGALURU: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was among 19 distinguished personalities conferred with the CBCI National Awards 2026, marking the inaugural edition of the newly instituted honours by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI).

The awards were presented during the 37th CBCI General Body Meeting held at St John’s Medical College, Bengaluru, on Monday.

The CBCI National Awards recognise individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Church, society, and the nation, reflecting Gospel values through contributions to human dignity, justice, education, leadership, innovation, and nation-building. The initiative underscores CBCI’s commitment to celebrating lives of faith in action, prophetic witness, intellectual engagement, pastoral leadership, and selfless public service across clerical, religious, and lay vocations.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sangma expressed gratitude to the CBCI, stating that the recognition reinforces the belief that public service grounded in values can make a meaningful difference. He noted that the award serves as a motivation to uphold and practice the ethical and moral teachings imparted by the Church.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Catholic Church in shaping youth, particularly in the Northeast, and assured continued collaboration. Referring to challenges faced by churches in different parts of the country, he called for unity and collective engagement, urging Catholic and Christian youth to emerge as leaders not only in politics but across diverse fields.
