SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that while it is not within the state’s mandate to declare whether the borders are fully secure, he assured that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure vigilance. “The Centre has a say in border security, but as a state, I can say all agencies are alert,” he said.
He added that on December 24, 2025, various agencies including the BSF, Intelligence Bureau, and others held a joint review to discuss border security measures. “We have been continuously monitoring the border. There is nothing major to be concerned about, but we must remain alert and prepared in every possible way,” Sangma said.
Regarding border fencing, he noted that out of approximately 440 km, around 40 km remains incomplete, particularly in West Jaintia Hills, South Garo Hills, with some delays due to land acquisition issues. “Most cases have been nearly resolved following a review four months ago, and I expect the remaining issues to be cleared very soon. The Government of India is also monitoring the situation closely,” he added.
CM Sangma: Talks with Assam on Disputed Areas to Resume After Elections
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that the discussions with Assam will resume after the elections in Assam, noting that the current government is engaged in conducting the elections.
“The elections are ongoing, so at the moment, the current government in Assam does not have the time to discuss this matter,” Sangma said while speaking to reporters today.
The purpose of the discussions is to reopen talks on the disputed areas that are yet to be resolved between the two states, which were held up after attempts to settle the matters and finalize the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2022.
“Once the elections are over, we will resume the talks properly and continue the discussions,” said the Chief Minister.
