SHILLONG: Sowmya Reddy, AICC observer for East Khasi Hills district, on Thursday, urged party leaders and workers to come forward and apply for the post of District President, formally releasing the application form for the position.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan Shillong, Reddy, who is also the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress and a former MLA, said the initiative is part of a broader organisational strengthening exercise ahead of upcoming elections.
Reddy stated that the Indian National Congress has launched similar restructuring drives across several states to reinforce internal democracy and improve organisational efficiency.
She emphasised that the process is transparent and inclusive, allowing interested members to apply not only for the post of District President but also for other organisational roles.
“This exercise is aimed at strengthening the party from within and ensuring wider participation of committed workers,” she said.
Highlighting the importance of grassroots engagement, Reddy informed that assembly-level interactions are being conducted to assess the party’s performance over the past decade.
She said these consultations are helping the leadership identify weaknesses, gather feedback, and formulate strategies to rebuild and revitalise the organisation.
The process, she added, is also designed to encourage new and young members to take on leadership responsibilities within the party structure.
Reddy also criticised the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, asserting that the opposition, including the Congress and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), is actively raising public issues and working to strengthen its base across states.
She said the opposition remains committed to addressing people’s concerns and offering a strong alternative.
According to Reddy, the ongoing introspection and restructuring exercise is intended to bring in fresh ideas, correct past shortcomings, and prepare the party more effectively for forthcoming electoral challenges.
She maintained that strengthening organisational unity and leadership at the district level will play a crucial role in rebuilding public confidence in the Congress.
