SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has announced that it will contest the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections independently, ruling out any pre-poll alliances.
Addressing the media, MPCC President Vincent H. Pala said the party’s election preparations are in full swing, with an intensive screening process underway to identify candidates with strong winning prospects.
Pala revealed that there has been significant interest in the Congress camp, with 67 aspirants initially applying for party tickets. Following two expected withdrawals, the party is now closely scrutinising 65 candidates to cover all constituencies under the District Council.
Clarifying the party’s position on possible alliances, the MPCC chief said the Congress has no plans to tie up with any other political party for the GHADC polls.
Instead, he emphasised that the party is committed to fielding candidates in all seats to showcase its organisational strength and grassroots presence across the Garo Hills region.
“We are carefully vetting each candidate. As of now, the Congress is set to go solo in this GHADC election,” Pala stated.
He added that the final list of candidates will be released after the completion of the party’s internal review process and once all organisational requirements are met.
