SHILLONG: Following the announcement of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) 2026 results by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) today, the state’s top achiever, Wangaal Lama, has shared a refreshing perspective on academic success. A student of Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School, Shillong, Lama clinched the first position in the state with an outstanding score of 585 out of 600 marks.
Speaking to media persons regarding his achievement, Wangaal confessed to feeling immense anxiety on the morning of the results. “I was very nervous, to the point where I didn’t even dare to check the results online or through any other means,” he shared. Instead, he chose to go directly to his school. It was only upon arrival that his teachers and classmates broke the news that he had topped the entire state—a moment he described as an “indescribable joy.”
In a message to his fellow students, the topper emphasized that reaching the pinnacle of academic success does not require one to be a “bookworm.” Wangaal believes in a more holistic approach to learning and growth.
“To reach the top, you don’t necessarily need to be a bookworm. A student should live a normal life and gain experience from all facets of living,” he remarked. He further explained that education should not be confined to the pages of a textbook but should involve absorbing wisdom from one’s surroundings and pursuing diverse interests. “Gather knowledge from all sides, not just from books, and when you sit for an exam, write from the heart,” he added.
Wangaal also offered words of encouragement to students from across the state, particularly those from rural areas who might feel disadvantaged. He urged them never to underestimate themselves regardless of their background, whether they hail from a remote village or a major township.
“Even if you haven’t performed well in every previous exam, the important thing is to believe in yourself, work hard, and fix your weaknesses,” he stated. He reiterated that focused preparation is more effective than constant studying. “I am not a bookworm, but I focus deeply when I study. The key is to do everything with sincerity and not to over-expect results; hard work alone will lead you to your goal.”
When questioned about his future plans, the state topper remained modest and thoughtful. He noted that he has not yet made a definitive decision regarding his career path. “I cannot say yet what I will do next, but what is certain is that I will continue my studies and make a decision when the time is right,” he concluded.
Wangaal Lama’s success has served as an inspiration for students across Meghalaya, proving that a combination of hard work, self-confidence, and a well-rounded outlook on life is the ultimate key to success.
