TURA: Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma, on Monday, led a high-level Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation to Goalgaon Rajabala to visit the grieving family of murdered activist Dilseng Sangma and demand immediate state action.
The tragedy unfolded on the night of January 9. Dilseng Sangma was reportedly returning from an inspection of illegal stone quarries in the Goalgaon area when he was ambushed by a violent mob.
Armed with stones and wooden clubs, the attackers unleashed a brutal assault. Though bystanders rushed him toward a hospital, the injuries were too severe—Dilseng tragically passed away en route, leaving behind a wife and four young children.
Accompanied by Dadenggre MLA Rupa M. Marak and several MDCs, Dr. Sangma labelled the incident a glaring failure of the state’s internal security.
“This is a dark reflection of the total lawlessness in our state. A family has been shattered, and four children are now fatherless because the government cannot control illegal activities,” Dr. Sangma stated.
The TMC has placed three non-negotiable demands on the table:
Fast-Track Justice: Immediate arrest and maximum punishment for every individual involved in the lynching.
Crackdown on Illegal Mining: An absolute, immediate shutdown of all illegal stone quarries in the region.
Enhanced Security: A massive increase in police patrolling to restore public confidence and safety.
The Police Response & Peace Initiatives:
The West Garo Hills police have confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the killing. However, as anger simmers in the local community, the District Commissioner has intervened to prevent the situation from escalating into communal unrest.
A Peace Committee involving various community leaders has been formed to maintain communal harmony and ensure that the tragedy does not spark further violence between different groups in the area.
