KHLIEHRIAT: The District Drug Disposal Committee on Thursday carried out the scientific disposal of seized narcotic substances at Star Cement Ltd., Lumshnong, in East Jaintia Hills district, marking a significant step in Meghalaya’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking.
The disposal exercise involved contraband seized from seven districts—East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills and North Garo Hills.
The destroyed narcotics included 183.28 grams of heroin valued at ₹34.83 lakh, 8.721 kg of Yaba tablets worth ₹1.48 crore, 296.79 kg of ganja valued at ₹6.97 crore, 2,793 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup worth ₹27.93 lakh, and 534 R-7 tablets valued at ₹2.13 lakh. The total estimated value of the disposed drugs stood at ₹9.10 crore.
In a press release, the Superintendent of Police (ANTF), Meghalaya, said the seized narcotics were linked to 58 NDPS cases registered across the seven districts. The disposal was carried out in strict compliance with legal provisions and prescribed environmental safety norms.
Police officials said the drive was not merely an act of destruction but a strong message of collective resolve to rid society of the menace of drugs and addiction. The exercise was conducted under the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), Meghalaya, launched by the Chief Minister in 2023.
Under the DREAM initiative, authorities have adopted a holistic approach combining enforcement, rehabilitation, awareness and community participation to combat drug abuse in the state. Officials added that every gram of narcotics destroyed symbolises lives protected, families saved and futures secured.
