SHILLONG: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister incharge of Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Friday confirmed that an Area Commander of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has surrendered before state police, marking a significant development in ongoing efforts to restore peace in the region.

Speaking to media persons, Tynsong said detailed information regarding the surrender would be released after the completion of preliminary interrogation and investigation by the police authorities.

“The ball is in the outfit’s court. The government is ready to move forward with peace talks if there is genuine intent from their side,” he said.

Tynsong acknowledged the hardships faced by insurgents living in hiding and encouraged cadres to surrender, assuring government support for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

He stated that many individuals eventually seek a normal life after prolonged isolation and emphasized that the government is committed to helping surrendered members rebuild their future.

Clarifying concerns over legal consequences, the Home Minister said the law would take its due course but assured protection and opportunities for rehabilitation to those who surrender voluntarily.

He urged active HNLC cadres not to fear arrest and instead choose a peaceful path by abandoning illegal activities.
