SHILLONG: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the police in East Jaintia Hills district seized 204 grams of suspected heroin and arrested two persons during a naka checking operation at Umkiang Out Post late on Sunday night.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on February 23, 2026, at around 11:30 PM, when a black Alto K10 bearing registration number AS-11-R-1523, travelling from Silchar, was intercepted at the checkpoint.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, the police recovered 17 soap boxes containing suspected heroin, weighing a total of 204 grams. The contraband was seized as per legal procedure.
Two persons were arrested in connection with the case. They have been identified as Suhal Ahmed (20), resident of Tarapur, Kalain, Cachar district, Assam and Aktar Hussain (37), resident of Kali Nagar, Shiv Narainpur, Cachar district, Assam.
Confirming the seizure, Superintendent of Police Pankaj Rasgania said that the accused have been taken into custody and further investigation is underway to trace the source and network involved in the illegal drug trade.
Police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying anti-narcotics operations in the district to curb drug trafficking and protect public safety.
