SHILLONG: Stressing the growing importance of education in a rapidly changing world, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong urged parents to prioritise their children’s education and not lose hope over the declining availability of government jobs.

He made the appeal while inaugurating the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of St Peter’s Higher Secondary School, Laitlyngkot on Friday, where he underlined that knowledge and skills remain the foundation of success and self-reliance in the modern era.

Tynsong noted that some parents have begun to feel that higher education is no longer necessary because securing a government job has become increasingly difficult. Cautioning against such thinking, he said education should never be viewed only through the lens of employment, as it plays a far greater role in shaping individuals and society.

“Without education, it is difficult for anyone to stand on their own feet. In today’s world, knowledge is not just important—it is essential,” he said, while adding that the government is working to create opportunities for young people across multiple sectors.

He further said that several government schemes and programmes have been introduced to support educated unemployed youth by helping them build skills, identify opportunities, and create sustainable livelihoods. According to him, these initiatives are aimed at turning education into a pathway for economic empowerment and long-term income generation.

Also addressing the gathering, Sohra MLA Gavin Miquel Mylliem expressed satisfaction over the school’s growth and achievements over the years. He praised the institution for its continued contribution to education in the region and lauded the commitment of its founders and management in shaping generations of students.

The inauguration of the jubilee celebrations was marked by the unfurling of the flag by the Deputy Chief Minister, followed by the release of balloons in the presence of dignitaries. A series of events and activities have been planned throughout the jubilee year, which will culminate in a grand closing ceremony next year.

On the occasion, Tynsong extended his best wishes to the institution and announced a government grant of Rs 20 lakh to support the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Responding to a request regarding road infrastructure, he also assured that officials from the Public Works Department would be deputed to inspect the matter and take necessary action.

Among those present were Archbishop of Shillong Diocese Victor Lyngdoh, MDC Shemborlang Rynjah, school principal Fr Kyrshan Kharpuri, along with community leaders, government officials, parents, and students.

The programme also featured colourful cultural performances by students, adding vibrancy to the occasion as the institution celebrated 60 years of service in the field of education.
