SHILLONG: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has expressed strong support for the growing mobilisation of Garo organisations in West Garo Hills and condemned the recent arson attack on the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) office in Chibinang.
Speaking to the media, FKJGP Central Body President Dundee Khongsit said that the increasing awareness among the Garo community regarding the protection of indigenous rights is important for safeguarding the interests of the people of Meghalaya.
The statement comes amid tensions in West Garo Hills, following the filing of nomination papers by former Phulbari MLA S.G. Esmatur Mominin at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tura for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Khongsit described the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) as institutions meant to protect the rights, land and identity of indigenous communities under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He said that these institutions play a crucial role in preserving the political and cultural interests of the tribal population.
The FKJGP leader also extended support to Garo pressure groups that have been advocating for restrictions on individuals without Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates from contesting the GHADC elections.
Referring to a government notification issued on February 17, Khongsit said the order reflects the sentiments of indigenous communities and cautioned that attempts to undermine it could disturb peace and stability in the state.
He further expressed concern about what he described as demographic pressures in the plains areas of Garo Hills, warning that unchecked political participation by outsiders could create long-term challenges for indigenous communities across Meghalaya.
Khongsit also said the organisation stands in solidarity with the Garo community in protecting the rights, culture and future of indigenous people in the state.
The statement comes at a time when tensions remain high in parts of West Garo Hills, following incidents of violence and unrest linked to the ongoing GHADC election process.
