From Service Reforms to State Honours: Meghalaya Cabinet Takes Key Decisions

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, today took a series of key decisions aimed at strengthening governance, streamlining administration, and recognising outstanding contributions to the state.

Border Areas Development Gets Administrative Boost

The Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Border Areas Development Service (Amendment) Rules, 2025, a move expected to bring clarity to promotion norms and service conditions within the department.

Chief Minister Sangma said the government has directed all departments to update their respective service rules to ensure efficient governance and career progression for officials.

Republic Day Arrangements Cleared

Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, the Cabinet also approved the Governor’s official address to be delivered in Shillong on January 26. Similar addresses will be delivered by Cabinet Ministers and senior dignitaries across districts to mark the national event.

Meghalaya Day Awards 2026 Announced

The Cabinet further approved the list of recipients for the Meghalaya Day Awards 2026, honouring individuals who have made exceptional contributions in diverse fields:

  • U Tirot Sing Award (Art & Culture): Dr. K.S. Nongkynrih

  • Pa Togan N. Sangma Award (Social Service): Father Binoy Joseph

  • U Kiang Nongbah Award (Sports & Games): Kong Riiohlang Dhar

Service Extensions for Key Development Projects

To ensure continuity in major developmental initiatives, the Cabinet sanctioned service extensions for senior officials involved in critical projects:

  • K. Wahlang, Superintending Engineer (Urban Affairs), granted a three-month extension to oversee ongoing urban infrastructure works.

  • Robert Lyngdoh, OSD and Ex-Officio Secretary (Planning), to continue his responsibilities in the Planning Department and Mega AGE Limited.

  • Brucele Marak, approved to continue as Advisor for the World Bank-funded Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP).
