SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has reiterated that the arrest of members of various organisations in Garo Hills following the recent unrest in the region was carried out strictly in accordance with the law.

Speaking to the media, Tynsong was responding to warnings issued by certain organisations that they would intensify their agitation if their arrested leaders and members were not released. He maintained that the action taken by the authorities was fully guided by legal provisions and due process.

He said that once arrests are made and chargesheets are filed, the matter must proceed as per the established legal framework. “There is a laid-down procedure under the law, and those arrested can seek bail through the court,” he stated, adding that the government would continue to act within the bounds of the law.

Appealing for calm, the Deputy Chief Minister urged the people, particularly in Garo Hills, to maintain peace and refrain from further escalation. He also pointed out that some of the concerns raised by the groups had already been addressed, including the postponement of the elections and the decision to allow the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to extend its tenure.
