SHILLONG: Elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) have been postponed further after the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) cabinet granted a second and final six-month extension to the council’s term.
With the constitutional maximum of one year’s extension now fully utilized, fresh GHADC elections can only be held after the new window lapses in April.
Government spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Wailadmiki Shylla explained that the extension was necessary due to ongoing administrative procedures, including the delimitation of constituencies and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The initial delay followed law-and-order challenges in the Garo Hills region, resulting in the first six-month deferment.
State rules allow the council’s tenure to be extended for up to one year in two six-month increments.
Shylla expressed confidence that the delimitation process will conclude soon, enabling the state to complete the election process within the extended timeframe.
