SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on Wednesday, informed that the state government has decided to postpone the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), due to the volatile situation in Garo Hills.

“Keeping the sentiments of the people in mind, the Government of Meghalaya has decided to postpone GHADC elections,” he said.

The GHADC election was earlier scheduled to be held on April 10 and counting on April 14.

West Garo Hills has been reeling under tension and unrest for the past two days; the unrest was sparked by the intention of former MLA Estamur Mominin to file for nomination for the GHADC polls.

The protesters argued that his decision to file for nomination violates the notification issued by GHADC disallowing candidates without ST certificates to contest the district council polls.

Yesterday, the Meghalaya High Court quashed this notification citing that this bill was passed by the Executive Committee of the GHADC and was not placed in the House nor received the assent of the Governor.
