SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has opened the door for dialogue over the proposed 5-star hotel project at Lumpondeng, stating that the government is available “24/7” to address concerns raised by various groups.

Expressing surprise at the opposition, Tynsong underlined that the project is crucial for boosting tourism in Shillong, which currently faces a shortage of high-quality accommodation for both domestic and international visitors.

He confirmed that the Cabinet has already approved the initiative and an MoU has been signed with a private firm ready to begin work.

Responding to environmental concerns, the Deputy CM assured that the project will strictly comply with key regulations, including the Environment Act, Water Conservation Act, and Wetland Conservation norms, along with stringent pollution control measures.

Rejecting fears of ecological damage, he stated that the development would instead enhance the area’s natural beauty through conservation of surrounding hills, rivers, and forests, drawing comparisons to the successful upkeep of Ward’s Lake.

Tynsong also urged youth not to be misled by misinformation, emphasizing that no environmentally harmful permanent structures would be allowed. Citing the Shillong-Dawki Four-Lane Road Project as an example, he noted how initial environmental concerns gave way to improved connectivity and aesthetics.

He further pointed out that some groups had earlier declined invitations for discussions with the Deputy Commissioner and reiterated the government’s willingness to engage at any time.

Meanwhile, protests continue as H. Bansiewdor Nonglang, Chairman of the Green-Tech Foundation, remains on a hunger strike at Madan Malki for the fifth consecutive day, opposing the government’s decision to hand over Lumpondeng to a private company for the project.
