SHILLONG: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has urged the Meghalaya government to expedite the second phase of border talks with Assam, focusing on the six remaining areas of dispute that continue to remain unresolved.
HSPDP President K.P. Pangniang stated that following the successful resolution of six locations during the first phase, the government must now prioritise the remaining sectors, including the sensitive Langpih region.
Recalling developments from 2022, Pangniang noted that after the initial settlement, the Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam had jointly visited Langpih, where both sides had agreed to take forward steps to resolve the long-pending boundary issue, which has persisted for over five decades.
With the Assam elections now concluded, he urged the state government to immediately resume discussions and work towards a final resolution. Pangniang pointed out that the Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, had earlier assured that talks would recommence once the electoral process in Assam was over.
He further informed that the HSPDP had already submitted a written reminder to the government last year, stressing the urgency of initiating the second phase of negotiations.
Residents in the Langpih sector, he added, have been anxiously awaiting progress, particularly after the formation of the new government in Assam, hoping that the long-standing dispute will finally be addressed.
The HSPDP is now planning to meet the Chief Minister in the coming days to press for the immediate commencement of talks. Pangniang emphasised that resolving the interstate boundary dispute remains a top priority for the party, noting that a final settlement would mark a significant milestone for both the government and the people of Meghalaya.
