Illegal Settlement in Shillong: KSU Acts Against 15 Non-Locals, Issues Warning

The KSU strongly warns house owners to respect and comply with this decision and not violate it by renting their houses to non-locals.

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle, on Monday evening, detected and detained 15 non-local persons (Muslims), found to be residing illegally without valid documents and without the knowledge or approval of the Dorbar Shnong.

These non-local individuals had come here in search of work and were staying in a rented house with two rooms in Laban. According to information gathered by the Union, the house had originally been rented out to two individuals who had not been staying there for the past few months. These individuals had then sublet the house to the 15 persons, allowing them to stay illegally without the knowledge of the house owners or permission from the shnong (local council).

The Union immediately evicted them from the house and removed all 15 occupants, and transported them by vehicle to Assam.

According to KSU Laban General Secretary Shiningstar Chyne, the Union wishes to once again remind everyone that, as per the meeting held between the Union and all seven Dorbar Shnongs under the Rait Laban Dorbar Pyllun and Dorbar Shnong Lawsohtun, along with the presence of Laban Police Station officials on September 5, 2025, it was decided that no non-locals would be allowed to rent accommodation within these areas without prior permission and verification by the respective Dorbar Shnongs.

The KSU strongly warns house owners to respect and comply with this decision and not violate it by renting their houses to non-locals. If, in the future, any house owner is found continuing to provide accommodation to non-locals, they will be held personally responsible for any consequences that may arise.
