KHADC Adjourns Session to Honour Late Shillong MP Dr Ricky A.J. Syngkon

The KHADC’s decision to suspend its proceedings highlighted the widespread sense of loss across political & public institutions in Meghalaya.

SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Friday adjourned its proceedings and suspended all scheduled business for the day as a mark of respect following the sudden demise of Shillong Member of Parliament Dr Ricky A. J. Syngkon.

As the House assembled, Leader of the Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne moved a proposal seeking the cancellation of the day’s agenda in honour of the late MP.

“As a tribute and a mark of respect to the sudden passing of our Shillong MP, Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon, I suggest to the House that we cancel all scheduled business for today,” Chyne said.

The proposal was accepted by the Deputy Chairman, who was presiding over the session. Consequently, the House took up only the Vote on Account (interim budget), which had been introduced by the Executive Member in charge of Finance on February 18. All other discussions and agenda items were set aside to maintain the solemnity of the occasion.

Before the formal adjournment, all members of the KHADC stood in unison and observed a one-minute silence as a collective expression of grief and respect for the departed leader. The gesture reflected the Council’s recognition of Dr. Syngkon’s contributions to the state and the community.

Dr. Syngkon passed away unexpectedly on Thursday night after collapsing during a football match. His final rites and funeral service are scheduled to be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at his residence in Nongsder.

The KHADC’s decision to suspend its proceedings highlighted the widespread sense of loss across political and public institutions in Meghalaya following the untimely demise of the young and promising parliamentarian.
