SHILLONG: The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous Council (KHADC), Winston Tony Lyngdoh, has informed that the District Council is currently examining the necessary steps to be taken regarding the proposal to implement an online system within its Trade Department.
The CEM shared this information while replying to a query raised by the Member of District Council (MDC) from Laban constituency, Ricky Shullai.
Elaborating on the matter, the CEM stated that last year, the KHADC had initiated discussions with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to seek their consultation and expert opinion regarding the Council’s aspiration to introduce digital operations within the Trade Department.
The CEM further clarified that the KHADC is attempting to introduce the online system strictly for the renewal of existing trading licenses only, and the Council has absolutely no intention of implementing an online process for the application of fresh or new trading licenses.
He explained that the adoption of an online system would significantly assist in tracking applications, particularly in maintaining accurate data on how many individuals or entities are seeking to renew their trading licenses.
Reiterating the Council’s cautious stance, the CEM emphasized that as of now, they do not intend to completely digitalize the entire Trade Department, but will limit the online application process specifically to those who wish to renew their trading licenses.
He also added that up to the present moment, the only section where the KHADC has successfully implemented and operationalized an online system is in the collection and management of Professional Tax.
