SHILLONG: As the tenure of Meghalaya’s Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Dr W.R. Kharlukhi nears its end, the National People’s Party (NPP) has reportedly begun internal deliberations on its nominee for the Upper House.
It may be mentioned that the sitting Rajya Sabha MP had earlier informed about his decision to take a back seat in politics and focus on his literary works.
Sources within the NPP leadership indicate a growing demand for a Khasi leader to represent the party in the Rajya Sabha. Several senior party functionaries, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the central leadership should seriously consider fielding a Khasi candidate once the term of the incumbent MP concludes.
Amid the discussions, NPP National Working President James P.K. Sangma has publicly expressed his willingness to take on the responsibility, should the party entrust him with the role. Speaking to the media, Sangma said the final decision rests entirely with the party leadership, adding that he would be ready to accept the assignment if nominated.
The development comes at a time when the NPP is recalibrating its political strategy ahead of key parliamentary and electoral milestones in Meghalaya.
