SHILLONG: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Nongmensong Unit on Friday apprehended several individuals suspected to be outsiders who were allegedly residing behind a petrol pump in Nongmensong without valid documentation.
Acting on specific information received around 2:00 am, KSU members—led by unit president Jeremaiah Pohthmi—along with organising secretary Samuel Kharbani, education secretary Edmund Marboh, finance secretary Callfort Khyriem, and other members, rushed to the location to verify the situation.
Upon inspection, the individuals were reportedly found without proper identification or documentation, raising concerns among local residents regarding their presence and how they gained access to the area.
During questioning, the individuals allegedly claimed that they had been brought in by an event management firm in Shillong.
Following the verification, the KSU unit drove the individuals out of the locality and issued a stern warning to the concerned manager, stating that any recurrence of such incidents would invite strict action in accordance with the organisation’s rules.
The union further alleged that the incident reflects gaps in the implementation of the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety & Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020. It stressed the need for stricter enforcement mechanisms to monitor the entry and stay of migrant workers in the state.
Additionally, the KSU cautioned contractors and agencies against bringing in labourers from outside without proper documentation, warning that similar violations in the future would be met with firm action.
