KSU Delhi Unit Rescues Meghalaya Woman from Assault, Possible Trafficking Attempt

The incident has revealed disturbing allegations, with multiple versions of events now under police scrutiny.

NEW DELHI/SHILLONG: In a swift and coordinated rescue operation in the national capital, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit successfully intervened to save a young woman from Meghalaya who was allegedly held captive and physically assaulted at her residence in Delhi.

The operation was launched after the KSU Delhi Unit received an urgent distress call from the victim’s sister. Acting immediately, KSU members coordinated with the Special Police Unit for North East Region (SPUNER) and the Malviya Nagar Police, leading to the victim’s rescue from what the Union described as a harrowing situation.

The incident has revealed disturbing allegations, with multiple versions of events now under police scrutiny.

  • Victim’s Statement: The woman alleged that she was brutally beaten and assaulted by a group of men after she resisted being coerced into a human trafficking and prostitution racket.

  • Accused’s Version: One of the accused claimed that he had gone to her residence only to recover a cash loan which the woman allegedly failed to repay.

However, the KSU confirmed that the victim was subjected to physical violence and “thombor” (assault and outrage of modesty), regardless of the motive claimed by the accused.

Both the primary accused and the victim are currently with the police as statements are being recorded and the investigation proceeds. The KSU Delhi Unit stated that it is closely coordinating with legal authorities to ensure the victim’s safety and to facilitate her safe return to Meghalaya once all legal formalities are completed.

“Our priority is her safety and ensuring that the law takes its course against anyone who thinks they can lay hands on our sisters,” a KSU representative said.

In the aftermath of the incident, the KSU Delhi Unit issued a strong advisory to youths from Meghalaya seeking employment outside the state, particularly in metropolitan cities.

The advisory urges:

  • Strict Verification: Thoroughly verify employers, job offers, and accommodation before relocating.

  • Caution Against Fake Offers: Remain vigilant against job offers that appear “too good to be true,” as they may be traps for exploitation.

  • Stronger Safeguards: The Union called upon the Meghalaya Government to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and protective measures for citizens working outside the state.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of young people migrating for work and the urgent need for stronger institutional safeguards, awareness campaigns, and swift legal intervention to prevent exploitation and trafficking.
