SHILLONG: News of supporters of Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, the sitting MLA of Mawkyrwat Constituency, preparing to join the National People’s Party (NPP), has been widely circulating across social media platforms.
A letter urging supporters to gather and witness the event has also gone viral across multiple WhatsApp groups, fuelling speculation about a possible political shift in the constituency.
According to the letter, the formal induction of Tongkhar’s supporters into the NPP is scheduled to take place on May 2, 2026, at the Nativity Auditorium in Mawkyrwat.
Political observers view the development as a strong indication that Tongkhar himself may soon return to the NPP. If he does so, it would mark a comeback to his former political fold, having previously been associated with the party.
Tongkhar first contested the 2013 Assembly elections on an NPP ticket but lost to the late Rowel Lyngdoh. He later switched to the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and won the 2018 elections, defeating Carnes Sohshang by a narrow margin of 458 votes. In the 2023 Assembly elections, he contested from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and retained the seat, once again defeating Sohshang.
The anticipated move by his supporters is being interpreted as a precursor to a potential political realignment, possibly paving the way for Tongkhar’s return to the NPP.
