Meghalaya Cabinet Approves University Status for IIPH Shillong, Clears Major Projects

The move was announced after the Cabinet meeting, marking a major milestone in Meghalaya’s healthcare and academic landscape.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Cabinet has approved the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the institute to be upgraded into a State University.

The decision is expected to significantly strengthen public health education, research, and policy advisory mechanisms in the Northeast region.

The move was announced after the Cabinet meeting chaired by the state government, marking a major milestone in Meghalaya’s healthcare and academic landscape.

Speaking to reporters, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said that the new university status would enable IIPHS to independently award degrees and function as a self-sustaining, research-oriented institution.

“With this status, the institute will be able to produce skilled public health professionals and strengthen epidemiological research,” Shylla said.

He added that the institution would play a vital advisory role for the government, particularly in managing public health emergencies and pandemics.

Highlighting the importance of scientific expertise, Shylla said recent developments, including the passing of former MP Ricky AJ Syngkon, underscored the need for a strong public health knowledge base in the state.

Apart from healthcare reforms, the Cabinet also approved several key infrastructure and tourism-related projects.

Orange Roots Restaurant, Sohra

The Cabinet approved the extension of the lease agreement for Orange Roots Restaurant at Rait Nongkhlieh in Sohra, also known as Cherrapunjee, for a period of 30 years.

The agreement includes a restructuring of lease rentals under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aimed at improving facilities and boosting tourism revenue.

Eco-Resort Project, Nongkhlaw

A No Objection Certificate (NOC) was granted for the furnishing, operation, and maintenance of the Eco-Resort in Nongkhlaw.

The project will include the expansion of guest facilities and enhanced catering services, with the objective of promoting eco-tourism and generating local employment.

Welfare Policy for Anganwadi Workers

In a major welfare initiative, the Cabinet approved the Meghalaya State Policy for the Promotion of Anganwadi Workers.

The policy provides a structured pathway for eligible Anganwadi workers to be promoted to the post of Supervisors, recognising their long-standing contribution to child development, nutrition, and grassroots healthcare services.

Officials said the move would boost morale among frontline workers and strengthen the state’s social welfare framework.

Boost to Governance and Development

With the approval of the IIPHS Bill and major infrastructure and welfare initiatives, the Cabinet’s decisions are expected to enhance healthcare capacity, promote tourism, and improve service delivery across Meghalaya.

The government said these measures reflect its commitment to strengthening institutions, supporting workers, and accelerating socio-economic development in the state.
