Meghalaya Clears Direct Appointment Rules for Top Sportspersons

“This policy reflects our commitment to nurturing sports talent and recognising the achievements of our athletes,” the CM said.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the draft Meghalaya Outstanding Sportsman Direct Appointment Service Rules with the objective of providing government employment to outstanding sportspersons in the state.

Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the Cabinet has resolved to create a special cadre for sportspersons who win medals in recognised national and international events such as the Olympics, National Games, and South Asian Games.

Addressing reporters in Shillong, Sangma said the rules will apply to six recognised sports disciplines, and appointments will be made based on the level and category of medals won by athletes.

To safeguard the interests of existing government employees, he said a separate category for outstanding sportspersons will be created, ensuring that the regular promotion and posting system remains unaffected.

The Chief Minister further informed that the government has clarified the implementation of the two per cent reservation policy for sportspersons. Under the new system, the Sports Department will certify eligible candidates through an online application process, following which official certificates will be issued.

Sangma said the initiative is aimed at encouraging sporting excellence in Meghalaya by providing financial security and career stability to talented athletes, while also ensuring the smooth functioning of government departments.

“This policy reflects our commitment to nurturing sports talent and recognising the achievements of our athletes,” he added.
