SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated that while a formal inquiry into the recent violence in Garo Hills is necessary to identify perpetrators, the state government has yet to finalize the specific nature of the probe.
The Chief Minister’s remarks follow mounting pressure from political parties and the Opposition, who have demanded accountability for the chaos that led to the large-scale destruction of both public and private property.
Speaking to the press, Sangma emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the root causes of the unrest. However, he noted that the administration is currently focused on managing the immediate aftermath.
“There is a definite need for an inquiry to understand what triggered this violence and who was involved, especially regarding the damage to government and private assets,” the Chief Minister said. “We need to examine these factors closely, but the government has not yet decided on the specific mode of inquiry as we are currently occupied with the prevailing situation. We will take a call in the coming days.”
Sangma also confirmed that Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma, has formally reached out to him via correspondence to underscore the urgency of a high-level investigation.
Addressing the ongoing issues within the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), the Chief Minister clarified the boundary between the state and the council. He reminded stakeholders that the Council is an autonomous body with the power to make its own decisions.
“While the State Government maintains a close relationship with the Council leadership and offers advice, the GHADC must take the final call in consultation with the new Chief Executive Member (CEM),” he explained.
When questioned about allegations that police have been conducting arbitrary arrests following the unrest, the Chief Minister maintained that law enforcement is acting strictly according to legal procedures and available evidence.
He declined to comment on specific operational details, stating that the investigation is an independent process conducted by the police.
The Superintendent of Police (SP), DIG, or IG are the appropriate authorities to address queries regarding specific arrests and evidence, he added.
