SHILLONG: In a significant development, the Meghalaya State Cabinet has approved a six-month extension of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), with the extended term set to run from April 18, 2026, to October 18, 2026.

Announcing the decision after the Cabinet meeting, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of District Council Affairs (DCA), Prestone Tynsong, said the extension is intended to provide the newly constituted Executive Committee (EC) adequate time to address pending administrative matters and undertake necessary legal reforms.

The decision comes amid a major leadership change within the council. Earlier in the day, Chief Executive Member (CEM) Albinush R. Marak resigned from his position. Subsequently, Dormonarth Ch. Sangma was elected as the new CEM of the GHADC.

According to Tynsong, the leadership change followed a no-confidence move by 21 Members of District Council (MDCs) against Marak. The members reportedly cited lack of consultation with the Executive Committee on key policy matters, particularly those related to Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates.

The Deputy Chief Minister outlined several reasons behind the Cabinet’s decision to extend the council’s term:

  • Public Unrest: Rising tensions in Garo Hills over the participation of non-tribal candidates in GHADC elections.

  • Policy Reforms: The need for consultations between the new Executive Committee and the State Government on proposed legislative amendments.

  • Public Demand: Addressing concerns of the local population to maintain communal harmony and ensure “Suk ka Saiñ” (peace and order).

“These six months will allow the new Executive Committee and the State Government to consult thoroughly and take necessary steps on legislative amendments that reflect the will of the people,” Tynsong stated.
