Meghalaya Government Practicing Fiscal Discipline Before PM’s Austerity Appeal

CM Conrad Sangma urged citizens to cooperate with national efforts aimed at maintaining economic stability

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday stated that Meghalaya has already been operating under an austerity-driven administrative approach, even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged states and citizens across the country to adopt cost-saving measures amid rising global economic uncertainty caused by the prolonged conflict in West Asia.

Addressing the media in Shillong, Sangma said the international situation, particularly the ongoing tensions in West Asia, has triggered economic concerns worldwide.

However, he noted that India remains comparatively stable and better positioned than several other countries facing economic strain due to fluctuating global conditions.

The Chief Minister informed that the Government of India has assured states that adequate energy reserves are currently available, but cautioned that the evolving geopolitical situation should be monitored carefully.

He emphasized that the Prime Minister’s appeal for austerity and preparedness was not meant to create fear among the public, but rather to encourage responsible planning and prudent use of resources should the crisis intensify further.

Sangma further remarked that Meghalaya has long practiced financial discipline and responsible governance, which places the state in a relatively prepared position during periods of uncertainty.

He urged citizens to cooperate with national efforts aimed at maintaining economic stability and encouraged people to follow advisories and guidelines issued by the Centre whenever feasible.
