SHILLONG: The Directorate of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, organized a mass cleanliness drive spanning approximately 100 kilometers from Nongpoh to Sohra under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), as part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign.
Themed “Ek Din, Ek Saath, Ek Ghanta,” the drive saw enthusiastic participation from students, colleges, community organizations, government departments, and local stakeholders.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, addressing the gathering, emphasized that cleanliness is a collective civic responsibility, not just a government initiative.
“No one can do it, but everyone can do it,” he remarked, urging every section of society to take ownership of their surroundings and make cleanliness a daily habit.
Dhar highlighted the need for convergence between urban and rural departments and called for stronger public cooperation, especially in establishing landfill and solid waste management facilities in towns like Jowai, Tura, and Nongpoh.

He also encouraged schools, headmen, and communities to promote better waste collection and disposal practices.
With Meghalaya emerging as a major tourist destination, Dhar stressed the importance of maintaining both the natural and civic environment.
The campaign aims not only to clean public spaces but also to foster lasting behavioral change and set an example of community-led cleanliness.
As part of the initiative, 24 vehicles—including 18 small vehicles and six trucks—were flagged off.
The event was attended by senior government officials, students, and community representatives.
