SHILLONG: Amid intensifying debate over the proposed Shree Cement project, the Meghalaya government has launched an inquiry into the deliberate digging up of a road in Lelad village, East Jaintia Hills.
The incident, which occurred ahead of the July 31 public hearing at Lum Shyrman, is believed to have been an attempt to block anti-project protesters from reaching the venue.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed on Thursday that the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills has been directed to oversee the investigation and identify those responsible. The government is awaiting the official inquiry report before deciding on further steps.
Despite mounting demands from opposition groups to nullify the July 31 public hearing, Sangma stressed the government’s commitment to a balanced approach. He noted that while protests continue, many local residents and landowners have expressed strong support for the Shree Cement project and other industrial ventures in the region.

The state, he said, must weigh all perspectives before arriving at a final decision.
Reaffirming the government’s openness to dialogue, the Chief Minister emphasized that any group wishing to discuss the project is welcome.
He reiterated that transparent communication remains the most effective way to resolve grievances, address misunderstandings, and achieve amicable solutions.
