SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong, has informed that the police investigation into the death of two Hajong youths whose bodies were recovered at Lumsohphoh is currently underway, with efforts being made to uncover the facts behind the incident.
Speaking to media persons, Tynsong said that the matter is being investigated by the police and that the investigating team is working to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
“The police are trying to find out what exactly happened, and very soon the truth will come out,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister assured that the police are carrying out the investigation thoroughly and will take necessary action against anyone found responsible for any unlawful activity.
Addressing concerns regarding law and order, Tynsong said that maintaining peace and security in society is a continuous responsibility and requires constant efforts from the authorities. He said that ensuring a safe environment is not something that can be achieved only through the presence of police personnel, as incidents can occur even in areas where security forces are stationed nearby.
“Even with the presence of police nearby, such incidents can still happen. However, whenever there is any illegal activity, the police are there and those involved will face arrest and legal action,” he stated.
The Deputy Chief Minister emphasised that the role of the police is not only to prevent crime but also to investigate incidents, identify those responsible, and ensure that justice is delivered through due process.
He reiterated that the police are currently focused on gathering evidence and establishing the sequence of events leading to the deaths of the two youths. He expressed confidence that the investigation would reveal the facts and appropriate action would follow based on the findings.
The incident has drawn attention, with authorities maintaining that the investigation will be conducted objectively and that anyone found involved in wrongdoing will be dealt with according to the law.
Just to recall, on Sunday, police received information regarding the recovery of two bodies at Lumsohphoh. The deceased were later identified as Pronome Hajong of Balat, South West Khasi Hills, and 21-year-old Semanto Hajong of Ranikor, South West Khasi Hills.
The bodies were subsequently shifted to NEIGRIHMS for post-mortem examination. While preliminary findings indicated a possible case of suicide, police stated that the exact cause of death and the circumstances leading to the incident would be established only after the post-mortem report is received.
An Unnatural Death (UD) case has been registered at the Laitumkhrah Police Station, and further investigation into the matter is underway.
