SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Police have put exhaustive security and law-and-order arrangements in place across the state capital ahead of the high-profile 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), which is scheduled to be held in Shillong on June 4, 2026.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem announced that tight security protocols will be strictly enforced covering the entire venue, official programs, and associated events. Given the high-profile nature of the plenary meet, which serves as a crucial collaborative platform for the region, the police department has undertaken grand preparations on the security front.
The high-level meeting will be chaired by the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. The event will also play host to an array of prominent dignitaries, including Governors and Chief Ministers from all eight Northeastern states, Union Ministers from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), state Chief Secretaries, and top-ranking civil and security officials.
To bolster local security measures for these high-profile visitors, additional forces from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and other specialized units are being brought into Shillong. These external units will begin moving into the city tomorrow, with full deployment of all security forces scheduled to be operational across the state capital by June 3. SP Syiem emphasized that the comprehensive law-and-order strategy takes into account every possible eventuality to guarantee the absolute safety and security of all visiting dignitaries.
The public has been advised that there will be slight traffic inconveniences during VVIP movements, and citizens are requested to bear with the temporary disruptions. Furthermore, specific traffic regulations, restrictions, and modifications will be implemented near the designated places of stay for the visiting dignitaries. Authorities will officially release the detailed traffic regulation and restriction blueprint tomorrow to minimize public inconvenience.
Substantively, the 73rd Plenary Session at the NEC headquarters will focus on a heavy developmental agenda. The session will review ongoing regional infrastructure, discuss follow-up actions from the previous plenary held in Agartala in December 2024, and finalize overall development priorities for the Northeast. Individual states are expected to present their specific funding, welfare, and strategic needs.
Discussions will heavily center around centrally backed initiatives, including NEC-funded socio-economic programs, the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE), and specialized road and infrastructure schemes under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS).
