SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s oldest Police Station, established in 1885 – the Sohra PS has been ranked as the 6th Best Police Station in India for 2025 by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
The prestigious recognition places Meghalaya firmly on the national map for excellence in law enforcement and public-oriented policing.
Speaking on the achievement, Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, said the station underwent a detailed national-level assessment conducted several months ago.
To secure the sixth position, Sohra Police Station excelled in multiple key areas, including speedy and transparent investigation and resolution, effective use of digital tools and record management, proactive measures to ensure public safety and high public satisfaction and citizen engagement.
With 15 police stations under the East Khasi Hills district, SP Syiem said the department aims to replicate Sohra’s success across all units.
As part of an ongoing transformation drive, the district police have focused on deployment of new patrol vehicles with updated technology, renovation and public-friendly police station buildings and enhancing communication, empathy, and professionalism among officers.
“Our mission is clear: whether in urban centres or remote rural areas, every police station must rise to this standard. We are committed to delivering world-class service to the people,” Syiem said.
Located in Sohra, one of the world’s wettest regions, the police station has emerged as a national model for effective and citizen-centric policing.
Officials said the recognition reflects years of consistent effort in improving service delivery, accountability, and community partnership.
The ranking is being seen as a major morale booster for the Meghalaya Police, highlighting the state’s growing reputation for professional and responsive law enforcement.
Authorities expressed confidence that Sohra’s success will inspire similar reforms across the state and strengthen public trust in policing institutions.
