NDAM Inaugurated in Shillong, Pledges to Strengthen Nutrition Leadership in Meghalaya

Speakers stressed the urgent need to address malnutrition through evidence-based interventions and sustained advocacy.

SHILLONG: The Nutrition and Dietetics Association of Meghalaya (NDAM) was formally inaugurated today at the NEHU Old Guest House, marking a major step toward enhancing nutrition leadership, scientific collaboration, and community health across the state.

Dietitian Balasara Lyngdoh, Vice President of NDAM, underscored the Association’s vision of building a nutritionally empowered Meghalaya through unified action and professional commitment.

Meanwhile, dietitian Majorica Warjri, Secretary of NDAM, outlined the Association’s core objectives, stressing the urgent need to strengthen nutrition awareness and address malnutrition through evidence-based interventions and sustained advocacy.

Lauding the efforts of dietitians, Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang called for collective action in tackling malnutrition and improving public health. He also highlighted the constitutional right to form associations, encouraging NDAM to uphold its mission with dedication.

The Association’s official logo was subsequently unveiled by the Mawlai MLA alongside the NDAM President.

Special Guest Dr. Caleb Harris delivered an impactful presentation on “Nutritional Consequences of Cancer,” emphasizing the importance of early nutritional assessment and culturally appropriate dietary protocols for patients.

Similarly, Mrs. D. B. S. Mukhim described NDAM as a catalyst for meaningful change in Meghalaya, noting its potential to influence healthier lifestyles. She stressed pillars such as preventive nutrition, childhood nourishment, soft parenting, proper sleep, timely meals, and the need to consume safe, unadulterated, and locally sustainable food.

Resource Person Dr. Wadamika Lyngdoh, Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety (Technical), emphasized the critical role of food safety in achieving a healthy society. She highlighted the need for diets free from contaminants, adherence to scientific food standards, and collective responsibility from both men and women in preventing lifestyle diseases. She recommended regular awareness campaigns and community-level engagement to promote healthy eating habits state-wide.
