NPP Leader James Sangma Elected Unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya

A central focus of Sangma's upcoming parliamentary agenda will be advancing key resolutions previously passed by the Assembly.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Democratic Alliance nominee and National People’s Party leader James Sangma was formally declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya on Thursday, securing his entry into the Upper House of Parliament after the nomination withdrawal deadline passed without any contest.

Following the issuance of his official election certificate by the Returning Officer, Sangma expressed deep humility and honour regarding his new parliamentary role. He described the election as a significant responsibility, particularly given the historically limited representation of the Northeast region in Parliament.

To counter this imbalance, Sangma stressed the importance of persistence, patience, and pressing for more time to be allotted in the House to ensure that the many complex issues affecting both Meghalaya and the wider northeastern region are forcefully articulated at the national level.

A central focus of Sangma’s upcoming parliamentary agenda will be advancing key resolutions previously passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Foremost among these priorities is the persistent demand for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.

Sangma stated that as a representative of Meghalaya, it is his bounden duty to carry the state assembly’s resolution forward and ensure it finds a strong voice in the halls of the Rajya Sabha.

The ILP remains a major political and social flashpoint in Meghalaya, with various local organizations and political parties actively seeking its enforcement to regulate the entry of outsiders and safeguard the demographic and socioeconomic interests of indigenous communities.

In addition to the ILP, Sangma pledged to champion the long-standing demand for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This constitutional recognition has been a major point of advocacy in the state for years, aimed at strengthening linguistic identity, securing institutional support, and gaining official national status for Meghalaya’s two primary indigenous languages.

Sangma’s uncontested entry into the Rajya Sabha comes at a crucial juncture for the state. Issues surrounding indigenous identity, constitutional safeguards, and regional development continue to dominate Meghalaya’s political discourse, ensuring that both language recognition and the ILP will feature prominently during his tenure in the Upper House.
