NPP Requests ECI to Remove Agatha Sangma from Star Campaigner List

The inclusion of her name was a result of a "communication gap" within the party's campaign management team.

SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) has officially moved the Election Commission of India (ECI) to remove Agatha Sangma’s name from its list of “Star Campaigners” for the upcoming elections.

NPP National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, clarified today that the inclusion of her name was a result of a “communication gap” within the party’s campaign management team.

The correction comes after it was noted that Agatha Sangma currently serves as the Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Given her official statutory position, her involvement in active political campaigning for the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections would be considered inappropriate.

“Agatha had informed me from the very beginning that she would not be able to campaign due to her current role,” Conrad Sangma explained. “However, because she is a senior leader of the party, the campaign team included her name without receiving the final clearance. We have now written to the ECI to rectify this immediately.”

Despite this revision, the NPP remains active on the ground with a robust list of 30 Star Campaigners designated for the Assam General Elections and the upcoming By-Election for the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency in Nagaland.

The party’s high-profile campaigners include:

Conrad K. Sangma (National President)

Prestone Tynsong & Sniawbhalang Dhar (Deputy CMs)

James K. Sangma & A.T. Mondal

Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh & Dr. Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma

Other prominent names on the list include leaders from across the Northeast, such as I. Hemochandra Singh, Rupert Momin, Marcuise N. Marak, and Mmhonlumo Kikon, signaling the NPP’s intent to strengthen its footprint in both Assam and Nagaland.
