NPP to Decide on MP Candidate; My Focus is MLA 2028: Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh

The NPP must weigh its long-term goals, especially as the 2028 General Election in the state of Meghalaya draws nearer.

SHILLONG: While the political spotlight remains fixed on the upcoming MP by-election, East Shillong MLA Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh has made her priorities crystal clear: her eyes are set firmly on the 2028 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly (MLA) election.

Speaking on her political future, Dr. Lyngdoh expressed a strong personal preference to focus on state politics rather than moving to the national stage. She dismissed any immediate ambition to contest for the Member of Parliament (MP) seat, emphasizing her desire to remain dedicated to her constituency and the state of Meghalaya.

Dr. Lyngdoh noted that if the choice were entirely up to her, she would prefer not to be drafted into the MP by-election race.

“If it were left to my personal will, I would want to be exempted from being tasked with the MP by-election,” she stated, adding that she aims to be fully prepared for the 2028 assembly polls.

Despite her personal inclination to stay “close to the ground” in Shillong rather than heading to Delhi, Dr. Lyngdoh acknowledged her role within the National People’s Party (NPP).

She clarified that the ultimate authority to field a candidate rests with the NPP leadership.

The party conducts a thorough internal assessment and must obtain the consent of the potential candidate before making any official announcement.

The NPP must weigh its long-term goals, especially as the 2028 General Election draws nearer.

This clarification from Dr. Lyngdoh signals a strategic move to strengthen her bond with local voters. By prioritizing the MLA seat, she is reaffirming her commitment to being accessible to the people of her constituency rather than representing the state in the Parliament.

As the NPP prepares its strategy for the upcoming by-polls, Dr. Lyngdoh’s stance highlights the internal balancing act between filling immediate vacancies and preparing for the major legislative battle in 2028.
