SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Central Executive Committee, in collaboration with the KSU Mawlai Circle and the KSU NEHU Unit, on Thursday unveiled a life-size statue of noted Khasi litterateur Myllung Soso Tham at the Central Library premises of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to commemorate his 85th death anniversary.

The statue was unveiled by North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) Chairman Samuel Jyrwa in the presence of KSU President Lambokstarwell Marngar, members of the KSU Central Executive Committee, NEHU faculty members, and members of the Tham family.

Recalling earlier efforts to honour the literary icon, it was noted that the KSU Mawlai Circle had installed a bust of Myllung Soso Tham near the Khasi Department at NEHU in 2005. The installation of the full-length statue at the Central Library has been described as a significant step towards preserving and promoting his enduring contributions to Khasi literature and culture.

Addressing the gathering, NESO Chairman Samuel Jyrwa said that the writings of Soso Tham remain highly relevant not only for scholars but also for social organisations. He said Tham’s works inspire people to stand firm and fearless in safeguarding the interests of the community.

Jyrwa further remarked that Soso Tham’s vision continues to offer hope and inspiration to the community, even in times of hardship.

KSU President Lambokstarwell Marngar, in his address, said that the observance of the 85th death anniversary of Soso Tham serves as a reminder of his immense contribution to society through his writings.

He said the unveiling of the life-size statue itself reflects the lasting impact of Tham’s work on the community. Emphasising the importance of meaningful contribution, Marngar stated that the true value of life lies not in its length but in service to society.

Marngar also reiterated the KSU’s commitment to continue its struggle on issues affecting the community, including the protection of land and identity. Referring to the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), he expressed concern over the lack of clarity and progress despite resolutions and existing legislation, and stressed the role of youth in safeguarding the community’s future.

As part of the programme, members of the KSU, NEHU teachers and students paid floral tributes by laying wreath at the statue of Myllung Soso Tham at the Central Library premises, NEHU, Shillong.
