Shillong Court Reserves Order on Raj Kushwaha’s Bail in Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case

The court's move follows the recent release of Sonam Raghuvanshi who walked out of prison late Tuesday night after being granted bail.

SHILLONG: The legal battle surrounding the high-profile murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi took a significant turn on Wednesday as the Shillong court reserved its order on the bail application of Raj Kushwaha, one of the primary accused in the chilling conspiracy.

The court’s move follows the recent release of Sonam Raghuvanshi, another key suspect in the case, who walked out of prison late Tuesday night after being granted bail.

Seizing on this development, Advocate P. Yobin, representing Raj Kushwaha, argued before the court for parity. He contended that since Sonam has been released, his client deserves the same legal consideration, maintaining that the grounds for their detention remain similar and alleging that certain procedural protocols under the constitutional framework were not strictly followed during the process.

While the current application focuses solely on Kushwaha, the legal pressure is mounting as the parents of three other accused individuals have reportedly approached Advocate Yobin to initiate similar bail proceedings. The court, having heard the detailed arguments from both sides, is expected to deliver its ruling at any moment, with a decision likely as early as tomorrow.

This dark tale of betrayal and violence is meticulously detailed in a massive 790-page chargesheet recently submitted by the police to the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Sohra. The document paints a grim picture of a premeditated execution, naming five individuals: Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha, and three alleged contract killers—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi.

The prosecution alleges that the group orchestrated a lethal plot to eliminate Raja Raghuvanshi during what was supposed to be a scenic vacation to the Khasi Hills. The timeline of the tragedy dates back to May 21, 2025, when Raja and his wife, Sonam, arrived in Shillong before heading toward the mist-covered landscapes of Sohra. By May 26, a missing persons report sparked a frantic search by the authorities.

The investigation took a dark turn on June 2, when Raja’s body was discovered at the bottom of the Arliang Riat cliff, near the famous Wei Sawdong falls, leading to a breakthrough that eventually unmasked the alleged conspirators.
