SHILLONG: In an incident during late-night naka checking, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg, sustained grievous injuries after being allegedly hit by a scooty rider who attempted to evade police checking in the early hours of Friday.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 1:30 am at Urkaliar near Samkhamti Petrol Pump, where personnel were conducting routine naka checking as part of ongoing law and order measures. A scooty carrying two male occupants reportedly tried to bypass the checkpoint and sped away despite being signalled to stop.
In an attempt to prevent their escape, ASP Lovish Garg intervened and directed the rider to halt. However, the scooty allegedly accelerated towards the officer and struck him, resulting in serious injuries.
He was immediately rushed to Woodland Hospital for emergency treatment and later shifted to the High Dependency Unit (HDU), where he is currently undergoing further medical care.
Preliminary findings suggest that the act may have been deliberate, with police indicating that the accused appeared to have intended to cause grievous harm to the officer in order to evade checking.
A case has been registered under charges of attempt to murder, and an investigation is underway. Police sources stated that the accused are suspected to be members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), though their motive and movements at the time of the incident are yet to be established.
The police have reiterated that naka checking operations will continue strictly in the interest of public safety and maintaining law and order. Authorities have urged the public to comply with lawful directions during such checks, warning that any attempt to evade or assault police personnel on duty will invite strict legal action.
