SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills district administration has denied permission for the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to hold a sit-in demonstration in Shillong on August 24, prioritizing public safety and the restoration of normalcy in the city.

Authorities are urging tourists not to change their travel plans, assuring them of a secure environment despite recent disturbances and enhanced police presence.

Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal explained that the decision was made to maintain tranquility and rebuild public confidence after a recent isolated incident.

Five companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and one company of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed, supplementing local police in round-the-clock city patrols.

Addressing potential visitors nationwide, Baranwal encouraged the public not to judge Shillong by a single event, emphasizing the city’s reputation as a welcoming, premier tourist destination.

The Tourism Department has activated a dedicated helpline to assist travelers, with the administration promising immediate support if needed.

The heightened security measures—similar to those implemented on August 21—will remain in place to safeguard important upcoming events, including the start of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly session and High Court proceedings.

Officials stated that these protocols will continue until both residents and tourists feel completely secure, ensuring uninterrupted daily life and tourism activities in Shillong.
