SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari on Wednesday said that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state will be carried out in 2026 as per the schedule laid down by the Election Commission of India, with the exercise likely to have a bearing on the timing of the anticipated Lok Sabha by-election in the Shillong Parliamentary constituency.
Addressing reporters, Dr. Tiwari informed that the training phase for the revision exercise will be conducted from June 20 to June 29, 2026. This will be followed by a house-to-house verification drive by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) from June 30 to July 29.
He said the draft electoral roll will be published on August 5, 2026, after which claims and objections can be filed between August 5 and September 4. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 7, 2026, with October 1 fixed as the qualifying date for the revision.
When asked whether the ongoing SIR exercise could result in the postponement of the Lok Sabha by-election, Dr. Tiwari said the revision process is currently underway and will continue as scheduled. On being further asked if the election could be held after October, he replied, “May be.”
Responding to concerns raised earlier this year by student organisations regarding alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls, including reports of households having as many as 50 voters registered, the Chief Electoral Officer assured that the revision exercise would be conducted strictly in accordance with Election Commission guidelines.
“SIR will happen as per the schedule and mandate. No ineligible voter will be included and no eligible voter will be left behind,” Dr. Tiwari said, adding that the election machinery would ensure the accuracy of the electoral rolls in accordance with the prescribed rules.
