MAWKYRWAT: Violence broke out during a meeting of the Dorbar Hima Langrin on Friday at Phlangdiloin in South West Khasi Hills district, leaving seven police personnel injured, including one seriously.
According to an official press release from the Office of the Superintendent of Police, South West Khasi Hills District, the meeting began peacefully around 11:30 AM at the Hima Langrin office compound in Phlangdiloin, with approximately 1,500 people—primarily supporters of the Syiem in attendance.
Tensions escalated when an opposing faction, also numbering around 1,500, arrived under the pretext of joining the proceedings and attempted to disrupt the gathering.
Police personnel and Magistrates managed to bring the initial disturbance under control, but chaos erupted again towards the conclusion of the event at around 12:15 pm.
Members of the opposing group became unruly, damaging chairs and other property at the venue. As Magistrates and law enforcement intervened to stop the mob from advancing toward the stage and causing further damage, some members began pelting stones at the police.

To disperse the violent crowd and prevent further escalation, security forces exercised minimal force.
Despite facing intense violence, police maintained restraint and firmness, successfully preventing the group from advancing until the crowd eventually retreated and dispersed from the venue.
All injured police personnel are currently receiving necessary medical treatment.
Police officials stated that the situation has returned to normal and remains under control, with adequate personnel deployed to ensure continuous monitoring and prevent further incidents.
Authorities are awaiting a formal First Information Report (FIR) from the office of the Syiem of Hima Langrin before initiating further legal action.
