Vice Raid Conducted in Shillong; 16 Booked Under Meghalaya Police Act

A total of 16 individuals identified as sex workers were detained during the operation in different prime locations in Shillong.

SHILLONG: A late-night vice raid was carried out on April 11, at around 11:30 PM in several key areas of Shillong following repeated public complaints about alleged immoral activities and public nuisance.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg, and SDPO Pynursla B. Wanswet, along with other police personnel. The raid targeted prominent locations including Police Bazar, the vicinity of Presbyterian Church (Police Bazar), IGP Point, and other busy public areas.

According to police sources, authorities had been receiving regular complaints from the public regarding obscene acts, solicitation, and disturbances allegedly caused by sex workers in these locations.

During the raid, police observed individuals allegedly engaging in prostitution-related activities, including approaching passersby, making gestures, and attempting to solicit customers in public spaces.

Officials stated that such activities were causing annoyance and obstruction to the general public and were also affecting the sanctity of nearby religious institutions and important public areas.

A total of 16 individuals identified as sex workers were detained during the operation. Subsequently, a case was registered against them under Section 110 of the Meghalaya Police Act.

Police officials indicated that such enforcement drives will continue in the future to address public complaints and maintain order in key areas of the city.
