West Garo Hills Curfew Update March 2026 | District Magistrate Orders Strict Restrictions in Garo Hills

While authorities are working towards stabilizing the situation, the extension of the curfew highlights the continuing volatility in parts of West Garo Hills.

TURA: The District Magistrate of West Garo Hills has extended the curfew across the district in view of continued concerns over public safety and law and order following recent incidents of violence.

According to an official order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the curfew—initially imposed on March 17—will remain in force from 6:00 AM on March 19 to 6:00 AM on March 20, 2026, unless withdrawn earlier.

The order, issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, stated that incidents of violence and disturbance of public peace across various parts of the district pose a serious threat to human life, safety, and property.

Authorities have deemed it necessary to continue stringent preventive measures to restore normalcy and prevent any further escalation of unrest.

Relaxation Hours Announced

To ease public inconvenience, the administration has announced a curfew relaxation from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on March 19, during which movement of people will be permitted and educational institutions, offices, banks, and other establishments will function normally.

However, outside these hours, strict restrictions will remain in place, and residents are required to stay indoors.

Strict Enforcement and Legal Action

The district administration has directed all law enforcement agencies, executive magistrates, and police personnel to strictly enforce the curfew.

Officials warned that any violation will invite penal action under Section 223 of the BNSS and other relevant laws.

Describing the situation as urgent, the administration noted that the order has been issued ex parte due to the grave threat to public order.

Situation Remains Sensitive

While authorities are working towards stabilizing the situation, the extension of the curfew highlights the continuing volatility in parts of West Garo Hills. Residents have been urged to cooperate with officials and adhere strictly to the guidelines to ensure safety and a quicker return to normalcy.
