₹51 Crore Drug Bust in Meghalaya: ANTF Seizes Heroin, Methamphetamine in East Jaintia Hills

Authorities said the seizure represents a significant step in ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking routes passing through Meghalaya

SHILLONG: In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of Meghalaya Police seized narcotic substances worth over ₹51 crore during a naka checking operation at Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills district on Friday.

According to an official press release issued by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) – Meghalaya, the operation was conducted on March 6, 2026, when ANTF personnel intercepted a Tata Sumo vehicle (registration number MZ-01-M-8625) during routine checking.

The vehicle was carrying a driver and two passengers. During the search, officers recovered 19 plastic soap cases containing suspected heroin weighing 203.7 grams from the possession of one of the female passengers.

Further inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of a blue trolley bag belonging to another passenger, which was found to contain suspected crystal meth (methamphetamine) weighing 10.145 kilograms.

Police officials stated that preliminary investigation suggests the individuals may be part of a larger inter-state and cross-border drug trafficking syndicate.

The total value of the seized narcotics in the illegal market is estimated at approximately ₹51.13 crore, making it the highest-value recovery of NDPS substances by Meghalaya Police to date.

A case has been registered at the ANTF Police Station, and investigators are currently working to establish forward and backward linkages to identify the broader network involved in the trafficking operation.

Authorities said the seizure represents a significant step in ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking routes passing through Meghalaya and neighbouring regions.
