SHILLONG: International comedy star Russell Peters brought the house down in Shillong on Friday night, delivering a high-energy performance that had the audience roaring with laughter at Lariti. The show, organized by Rockski EMG, was part of his ongoing Relax World Tour.
Peters captivated the packed venue with his signature observational humour, drawing on cultural differences across India—especially playful takes on the North East. His set also touched on personal stories, global affairs, and his perspective on India’s growing influence on the world stage.
The evening highlighted Shillong’s rising stature as a hotspot for international live performances, with an audience that engaged enthusiastically throughout the show. Peters even interacted with attendees, turning spontaneous moments into comedic gold.
Speaking to the media after the performance, the comedian shared a mix of humour and honesty about his visit. He joked that although many people approached him for photos around town, not all of them seemed to recognize him.
He also noted that he had toned down certain jokes—particularly those involving religion—which he usually performs in Western countries. Despite this, he said the Shillong crowd responded warmly, adding that the set “worked.”
Peters expressed admiration for the city’s vibrant music culture and revealed his interest in visiting a local venue known for live basement gigs. A long-time rock enthusiast, he mentioned missing a performance by Def Leppard by just a day.
Describing Shillong as both nostalgic and refreshing, Peters said it reminded him of the India he experienced during his childhood. Admitting he previously knew little about the region, he said the audience exceeded all expectations.
“Shillong is a great concert city with an enthusiastic crowd. People don’t just come to watch—they come to have a great time,” he remarked.
